Brainstorm a list of challenges teachers may encounter when involving students in the assessment process.
Introduction
Some students prefer non-traditional methods of assessment. They may not be able to communicate their responses on paper: however, they understand the content. It is important to try to involve students in the assessment process so that we can best determine their skill level.
Problems
-When are involved in developing assessments, they may not provide thorough input.
-As teachers, it may be difficult to allow students to complete different assignments and be fair.
Solutions
-Teachers could develop rubrics that clearly outline expectations for various types of assessments: posters, multimedia presentations, etc. - Teachers should carefully guide/facilitate discussions involving student input.
-Teachers should make sure that students are aware of the objectives and standards relative to the unit. Moreover, teachers should make sure that students develop questions, assignments, and projects related to the curriculum standards.
